USSR 1937 - Architecture of New Moscow
English Text

At the beginning of the 1930s, Soviet architecture began the process of departing from the avant-garde trends toward a rethinking of the classical heritage of the past that eventually led to the emergence of the ‘Stalinist Empire’ style. On June 16, 1937 the Soviet Postal Authorities issued a set of stamps depicting ambitious monumental architectural projects in Moscow. From the projects shown, only two were eventually implemented: The ‘Central Red Army Theatre’ (1934-1940) and the ‘Moscow’ Hotel (1932-1938).
