Projecting an image of a victorious and virile Third Reich was always uppermost among Joseph Goebbels' priorities, and pageantry invariably played a big part in his designs for keeping up the people's morale. No occasion was celebrated with greater splendor than 20 April, Hitler's birthday. Royalty from foreign countries sent him elaborate gifts. The most celebrated individuals in the Reich to the most common man on the street sent presents to their Fuhrer according to their means. The wealthy and the famous sent works of art. Peasant boys picked and delivered enormous bouquets of edelweiss. Old women knitted socks or embroidered curtains and tablecloths.
