To celebrate the Leipziger Frühjahrsmesse (Leipzig Spring Fair), the Reichspost issued a set of four stamps on March 3, 1940. The fair dates back to the 12th Century and it was a major event for trade across Europe. The Leipziger Messe was built at the intersection of two major historic trade routes, the “Via Regia” and the “Via Imperii”. There were two fairs each years, in Spring (Frühjahrsmesse) and Autumn (Herbstmesse). In 1937, Leipzig was officially renamed Reichsmessestadt Leipzig (Imperial Trade Fair City Leipzig).
